Abstract

This study examines the role of economic sanctions as a foreign policy tool, focusing on the case of Russia. Historically, sanctions have been employed by nations to exert pressure on adversaries through economic means. In modern contexts, the scope of sanctions has evolved to include travel bans, trade embargoes, and asset seizures. Following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the United States and its allies imposed extensive sanctions on Russia, significantly impacting its economy, politics, and society. This research aims to assess the effectiveness of these sanctions in altering Russia’s behaviour and to explore how the country has adapted to them. By analysing the direct economic effects on key sectors and the broader implications for international relations, the study seeks to contribute to the understanding of sanctions as a complex
instrument of coercion in global politics.
